Recycling Handler - Full-Time

​Job Summary:
The Recycling Handler will sort and process recyclable materials safely, provide customer support, help maintain and repair equipment and materials as needed, and perform other roles such as cashier, baler or forklift operator as needed. Part-time positions also available.

Reports to:
  • Roy Kadota, Owner

Schedule:
  • 30 - 40 hours per week (on average; Part-Time positions also available)
  • 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., available for shifts Sundays through Saturdays

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Communicates effectively and respectfully with customers and other workers, such as about Mr. K’s policies and products.
  • Directs drivers and/or customers to loading and unloading areas and assists with loading and unloading.
  • Separates materials into groups based on the material makeup of products and weighs them
  • Ensures safe handling of hazardous or materials that are heavy or bulky, or that may be potentially dangerous, such as glass and metals.
  • Cleans and maintains recycling equipment and facility throughout the day.
  • Repairs any damage to Supersacks and other storage resources as needed.
  • Accurately and promptly clocks or signs in and out for breaks.
  • Attends all required trainings and meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, which may include Cashier, Baler or Forklift Operator.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Ability to follow rules and safety guidelines, and work cooperatively with others.
  • Pass a background check and have a clean driving record on an annual basis or as needed.
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate a forklift and other recycling equipment preferred.

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license preferred.
  • Valid forklift operating license preferred.
  • Pay commensurate with experience.

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of standing and carrying materials.
  • Must be able to perform physical labor including reaching, bending, grasping, pulling, climbing, and lifting. This may include hand-dexterity tasks such as sewing to repair SuperSacks.
  • Must be able to perform work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds at a time, observing proper lifting and carrying procedures.
  • Must be able to read labels on materials to determine redemption eligibility.

ADDITIONAL ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
If you qualify and as needed by Mr. K’s, you may be asked to assume roles and responsibilities, in addition to those of Recycler Handler. You will receive on-the-job training for each role. These roles may include the following:

ADDITIONAL ROLE:   CASHIER
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Confirm that items are eligible for redemption, and provide payments to customers for their HI-5 items brought in for redemption.
  • Weigh other recyclable items, such as scrap metals and e-waste, and inform the proper people to complete the customer’s transaction.
  • Price donations brought in to be sold.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Basic mathematical skills, as needed to make change and give refunds.
  • Knowledgeable about company’s products and services, and customer-related policies.
  • Good customer service and verbal skills.
  • Able to operate necessary equipment, such as scales.
  • Able to confirm eligibility of customer’s items by reading labels or symbols.

ADDITIONAL ROLE:   BALER
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Load items into the baler and weigh bales produced.
  • Follow all safety procedures related to the machine.
  • Clean and maintain equipment throughout the day, and perform maintenance checks monthly and as needed.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong mechanical skills and ability to follow directions.
  • Able to operate machinery in all weather conditions and for prolonged periods as needed.
  • Forklift certification and training.

ADDITIONAL ROLE:   FORKLIFT OPERATOR
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Identifies and transports requested materials to and from various locations.
  • Follow all safety procedures related to the machine, including proper use of safety equipment.
  • Services equipment as needed, reporting mechanical or electrical difficulties to Mechanic.
  • Manages and piles pallets and other supplies in specified areas.
  • Reports any problems with materials or transportation to supervisor.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong mechanical skills and ability to follow directions.
  • Able to operate forklift in all weather conditions and for prolonged periods as needed.
  • Forklift certification and training. 
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and clean driving record/history.

ADDITIONAL ROLE:   E-WASTE HANDLER
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Communicates effectively and respectfully with customers and other workers, such as about Mr. K’s policies and products.
  • Categorizes different e-waste commodities, loads them onto pallets, and shrink wraps them.
  • Loads pallets into shipping containers.
  • Writes packing list detailing container contents following Mr. K’s format.
  • Collects e-waste from designated transfer stations (currently at Hilo, Waimea, and Kealakehe), and commercial e-waste from businesses upon request
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and clean driving record/history.
  • CDL certification and ability to sort CDL accurately.
  • Forklift certification and training, and able to operate forklift in all weather conditions and for prolonged periods as needed.
  • Ability to follow rules and safety guidelines, and work cooperatively with others.
  • Strong mechanical skills and ability to follow directions. ​
